“In the broad light of day, mathematicians check their equations and their proofs, leaving no stone unturned in their search for rigour. But, at night, under the full moon, they dream, they float among the stars and wonder at the miracle of the heavens. They are inspired. Without dreams there is no art, no mathematics, no life.”
[En la amplia luz del día, los matemáticos revisan sus ecuaciones y sus demostraciones, no dejando piedra sin voltear en su búsqueda del rigor. Pero, de noche, bajo la luna llena, sueñan, flotan entre las estrellas, y se maravillan del milagro de los cielos. Se inspiran. Sin sueños no hay arte, ni matemáticas, ni vida.]
Gracias al Prof. Michael Atiyah [video] por compartir el pasaje poético previo en NOTICES, Vol. 57, No. 1, p. 8 (Enero 2010, AMS). También publicado en el libro The unravelers: mathematical snapshots (editado por Jean-François Dars, Annick Lesne y Anne Papillault y publicado por A. K. Peters, Ltd., 2008, en colaboración con el IHES). Como dice Barry Mazur en la contraportada, este libro [con sus gemas de ensayos y geniales fotografías] “ilumina la gloriosa experiencia de estar inmerso en las ciencias matemáticas”. Ojalá puedan adquirir, disfrutar y compartir este libro-poema.
